Primarily so because almost any material can be coated with ta-C (Pure DLC) and then it can last "forever" against wear and abrasion.

Three
figures (below - scroll down) show examples
of the increased resistance from erosion by tumbling in a slurry of 240
mesh SiC grit given to 304 stainless steel by a 1 μm
thick layer of pure DLC.
 The
first 100 min. just burnishes off the soft carbon debris left on the
ta-C coating (upper) from the deposition process.

 After
54 hrs. and 40 min. tumbling erodes away about 5 μm
of stainless from the part of the sample not coated. The ta-C
coating remains unaffected.
