Measurement of DLC film properties
1) sp3 content, one of the critical numbers for identifying which type of DLC or ta-C is present.
The sp3 content, mass density, and Young's Modulus (YME) are correlated. The YME is most readily and accurately obtained from measurements of the velocities for propagation of elastic waves of different frequencies excited by the impulses delivered by a pulsed laser beam focused upon the surface of the material.
Both commercial services and devices are available for such measurements.

As should be the case, YME and density are found to be correlated... Provided the coating measured is thick enough.

An example, together with the conversion from YME to sp3 fraction is shown for "Texas diamond" on the page Example
